Shipt is a membership-based online grocery marketplace offering same-day delivery of fresh foods and household essentials, through a community of loyal shoppers, in more than 250 markets across the country. Shipt was founded in Birmingham, Alabama but a couple years ago opened an office in San Francisco. Not many cities can compare to the talent found here. The company has grown so fast that we have already moved onto our third office in SF. We are really excited to be part of the unique culture of The City.
How did your business get its start?
After a frustrating trip to the grocery store with his two young children, Bill Smith thought there has to be a better way. In 2014, Bill founded Shipt with a goal of simplifying grocery shopping by providing same-day delivery and an amazing customer experience. Since then, the company has expanded to 46 states and offers same-day delivery to more than 80 million households in 250 metro areas.
What is the secret to your longevity?
Our Shipt Shoppers are at the heart of all we do. We’ve built a network of over 100,000 shoppers nationwide that provide our members with an unparalleled experience every day. Shipt also recognizes that by treating shoppers well, they treat members well, so the company has worked hard to create a positive, supportive community for both shoppers and members. With our incredible shoppers and loyal members, Shipt is impacting lives in so many positive ways.
Why was it important to be located in San Francisco?
In 2016, Shipt opened a second office in the Bay Area to take advantage of the culture and world-class technology talent available here. Our goal was to create this great cultural mix between San Francisco and Birmingham that would be unique to our company. We get to tap into all the creativity of the region while blending with the Southern hospitality of our Birmingham roots. It is a company culture unlike any other in the Bay Area.
What are some challenges you see facing your industry?
Same-day delivery is growing in popularity nationwide, and it can be difficult to differentiate your business in a crowded space. However, Shipt relies heavily on the unmatched personal experience our shoppers are creating. That’s been ingrained in the company culture from the beginning, and it continues to help us stand out and provide top-notch service.
How can your business help other businesses as well as people in their everyday lives?
