San Francisco, CAThe San Francisco Chamber of Commerce today joins countless elected officials, business leaders, and local advocates to urge leaders in Sacramento to fulfill its commitment to provide critical bridge funding for regional transit agencies.

“Public transportation is the backbone of our economy and our workforce,” said Rodney Fong, President & CEO of the San Francisco Chamber of Commerce. “Businesses across San Francisco, from small retailers to global employers, depend on safe, reliable, and frequent transit to connect workers with jobs, customers with storefronts, and visitors with our city’s cultural and commercial destinations. Allowing service cuts now would jeopardize our economic recovery and undermine years of progress.”

This potential loss in funding comes at a critical time for San Francisco’s economic recovery. According to Placer AI cellphone data, San Francisco has one of the highest increases in office visits year over year compared to other US cities. Matched with increasing tourism numbers and rising office leases year over year, the region is reaching a post-pandemic higher watermark in transit reliance which must not come under threat.

“As vibrancy across the region continues to grow with more and more employees returning to the office, certainty is needed,” Rodney Fong continued. “Service cuts being estimated now anywhere between 40-80% create catastrophic consequences in a market already rocked by immense change. Small and medium businesses sized businesses, along with the working families behind them, will feel the costs of cuts most. Loss of this funding would impact the daily commutes, work, and travel to the tune of hundreds of thousands of people everyday.”
