Vision Zero: Safe Streets SF

Did you know…

…that you must stop for a pedestrian, whether the pedestrian is in a crosswalk or not?

…that if you are a pedestrian, did you know that you are not supposed to enter a crosswalk once a countdown clock has started or the red hand is flashing?

Those are two gems of information shared by the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency at Tuesday’s Public Policy Forum on Vision Zero SF, which strives for zero traffic deaths by 2024. So far the effort has focused on education and marketing (yield to pedestrians!) and high-visibility enforcement with ongoing evaluation. Here’s an interesting fact: Just 6% of streets in San Francisco account for 60% of severe/fatal pedestrian collisions.
